Every day we take thousands of steps, and every step combines our human effort (picking a direction and moving one foot forward) and God's sovereign help (giving us the ability to take that step and being our Good Shepherd as we walk.) While that is true for every step, some steps feel bigger and scarier!
The apostle Peter had one of those steps he had never taken before.
“'Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.' He said, 'Come.' So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, 'Lord, save me.' Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, 'O you of little faith, why did you doubt?' And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, 'Truly you are the Son of God.' Matthew 14:29–33 (ESV)
I can especially relate to Peter this week, as my wife and I dropped our oldest daughter off at Liberty University, a step we have never taken before. We asked you to pray and God has answered so kindly. Thank you for praying! We have made memories, found classrooms, moved in and met new friends. But there are many more steps ahead of her, and ahead of us, and ahead of you. We all need to step out in faith and prayer, so let's do that together.
