On the Road Again: Praying Like Abraham’s Servant

As I shared in my last post, our team had a wonderful trip to participate in the Sing! Conference. And I’m feeling just about caught up from that trip and it’s time to hit the road again. This time I have the blessing of joining 250 Christian tech leaders, church leaders, and thought leaders at the Awaken Summit in Monterey, California. We will all be focusing on one question: what does it mean to be faithful in this tech-driven cultural moment?

I’m excited and humbled to be part of asking that important question. But I’m also feeling like Abraham’s servant when he went on a very important trip to find a wife for his master’s son. You can read the whole story in Genesis 24, and here’s the pattern that from that trip that I want to follow on my trip.

1. First, Abraham and his servant don’t know how the trip will go, but they are confident in the LORD. “For the LORD, the God of heaven … will send his angel ahead of you.” (Gen 24:7, NLT)
2. Second, the servant prays during the trip, asking, “please give me success today and show unfailing love to my master” (Gen 24:12)
3. Then God answers, showing that he is outside of time—his provision was already on the way! “Before he had finished praying, he saw a young woman named Rebekah coming out with her water jug on her shoulder.” (Gen 24:15)
4. And the servant’s response to this? Did he pat himself on the back after the stressful part of his trip was over? No, he worshiped God and gave God all the credit. “Then I bowed low and worshiped the LORD. I praised the LORD, the God of my master, Abraham, because he had led me straight to my master’s niece to be his son’s wife.” (Gen 24:48)

We’re all serving our Master on uncertain roads this week, so let’s use this God-honoring pattern as we pray together now.

• O Father, you are the God who goes before us—whether it’s on a trip far away, or the familiar daily road we travel. In both cases we don’t know or control the outcome, but you do. Thank you.
• Lord, because of our great confidence in You, we pray that you give us success today, and success for this Awaken Summit. Please show us your unfailing love as you work in our lives!
• We trust you and obey you despite the uncertainty we face this week and ask you for your guidance. Direct our thoughts, our steps, and our conversations. We are thousands of different people, most of whom don’t even know each other, but we are on the same big mission—to make devoted disciples of Jesus.
