We read in Mark 6:34 that Jesus “saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd,” and he miraculously fed five thousand men and probably even more women and children who were there! How amazing is that!? Drawing huge crowds of people is exciting and feels like success, but it’s not God’s primary or usual means of saving people and bringing his kingdom. Impact on crowds is often shallow and short-lived.
Don’t forget that Jesus had a small group, too. A significant portion of his time was spent eating, traveling, teaching, and mentoring the twelve who knew him best. That was how he chose to reach the whole world. I believe it’s the same today. So, first I encourage you to be part of a home group, a bible study, or life-stage group. This is where many of the filters come off and significant impact happens between believers—as we share, study, and pray for real life together.
I believe that prayer thrives most in small groups, so starting next week we are launching several initiatives to help them PrayMore. Please join me in prayer:
